The grass-leaved cress ( Lepidium graminifolium ) is a species of cress from the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae).
description
The grass-leaved cress differs from the other cress species mainly in the shape of its stem leaves and the shape of its fruits.
It is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 70 cm. It is mostly branched from the ground up, with more or less stiff, straight branches.
The stem leaves are very narrow, linear to lanceolate, and quite small: 1 to 4 cm long and 1 to 5 mm wide. They are quite scattered on the stem. The inconspicuous basal leaves are somewhat broader, spatulate and serrated or somewhat pinnate at the base.
The small white flowers are densely packed at the tip of racemose inflorescences . As the fruit ripens, the axis of the inflorescence elongates so that the fruits are far apart.
The fruits are flattened, egg-shaped to elliptical pods , which are slightly pointed at the upper end, in any case not rounded or edged like the pods of most other types of cress. The fruit stalk is about three to four times as long as the pod.
The species has chromosome number 2n = 16 or 48.
Occurrence
The grass-leaved cress occurs in southern Europe and central Europe , in North Africa and in western Asia. Individual finds of introduced populations are also available from coastal areas of North America with a moderate climate . However, the species is rare everywhere.
It grows in rocky places or on dry wasteland , especially near large rivers. In Germany it occurs only in the middle Rhine valley , in the lower Moselle valley , in the lower Nahe valley and in the lower Main valley . In Central Europe it is a character species of the Hordeetum murini from the association of Sisymbrion. In southern Europe it occurs in companies of the Hordeion Association.
