Hallettsville is the district capital and county seat of Lavaca County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located at the junction of US Highway 77 and US Highway 90A , 150 km east of Austin just north of the county center in southeastern Texas, is 130 km in the southeast from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 5.8 km² without any significant body of water.
history
The place was named after John Hallett, one of the first settlers, who settled here in 1831 and donated the land for the place in 1836.

According to the 2000 census, 2345 people in 1019 households lived here. The population density was 406.0 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 77.10% White, 16.46% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 4.48% other ethnic groups. About 1.62% were mixed race and 11.17% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,019 households, 29.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.0% of these were married couples living together. 14.6% were single mothers and 38.4% were non-families. 35.6% of all households were single households and there were people living in 21.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 3.00.
