Cross Plains is a city in Callahan County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in the southeast corner of the county, just north of the geographic center of Texas and has a total area of 3.1 km² without any significant water surface.
history
The former settlement was named Turkey Creek and Schleicher . In 1877, with the opening of the first post office, it was renamed to its current name. In 1880 Cross Plains had 25 inhabitants, in 1885 there were 175. In 1910, the town received city rights with 600 inhabitants. Since 1909 the newspaper "Cross Plains Review" appears. In 1912 the Texas Central Railway reached Cross Plains. When oil was discovered nearby in 1925, the town developed into a local supply center for agricultural products. In 1940 the population was 1,229 and remained almost stable until the 1980s. After the railway line to Cross Plains was closed, the population dropped to 1,063 in 1990.
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 1,068 people lived here in 432 households and 285 families. The population density was 343.6 inhabitants per km ². The population was approximately 97% White ½% Native Americans 2% others. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.34% of the population.
Of the 432 households, 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.2% of them were married couples living together. 10.6% were single mothers and 33.8% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were single households and there were people living in 19.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 3.03.
25.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.3% 18 to 24, 21.7% 25 to 44, 22.4% 45 to 64, and 23.5% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 84.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 81.0 men.
The median income for a household in the 22,235 USD , and the median income for a family 27,500 USD. Males had a median income of $ 22,188 versus $ 17,955 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,284. 23.3% of the population and 18.5% of families are below the poverty line. 33.3% of these were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 19.0% were 65 or older.
