Klimovsk ( Russian Кли́мовск ) is a district of Podolsk in Moscow Oblast in Russia with 56,186 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It was an independent city until 2015.

geography

It is located 53 km south of Moscow on the north-south railroad between Moscow and Kursk . It is divided by the railway line, or by the old Simferopoler Chaussee , which runs parallel to it , into two independent districts of about the same size, Wessennjaja (Весе́нняя) in the northeast and Grivno (Гри́вно) in the southwest. Wessenjaja can be seen as the city center, where most of the population lives.

The cityscape is urban and, depending on the district and the year of construction, shaped by the respective Soviet housing style. The expansion of the city took place in stages during the Soviet era. The first post-Soviet construction projects for residential complexes have now been completed.

history

Founded in the first half of the 19th century as Klimowka (Кли́мовка), the village was named after its first resident, Klim . In 1882 the place was renamed to its current name. At the same time the city was founded together with a loom factory.

Around 1928, thanks to increasing industrialization, the place grew to a city with 11,000 inhabitants. In 1940 Klimovsk was also officially elevated to the status of a city. In the course of the expansion of Moscow towards the southwest and the associated reclassifications in Moscow Oblast, Klimovsk was incorporated into neighboring Podolsk on June 18, 2015, after the city districts had already been united.
