Town hall Windecken from the market square

The historic town hall of Windecken is used today as the city library of the city of Nidderau , whose district is Windecken today.

Geographical location

The former town hall is located on the narrow western side of the market square in Windecken.

building

The town hall is a two-storey renaissance building . A building inscription dates from 1520. The main facade facing the market square is emphasized by a stepped gable and an oriel . The bay window shows the coat of arms of the sovereign at the time the town hall was built, the county of Hanau-Münzenberg . On the first floor there was an originally open hall with Gothic pointed arches . This indicates an older construction phase, so that the age of the building is also dated to 1450. The formerly open halls are now glazed and integrated into the interior. There is also the "treasure chamber", which is secured by a forged door.

During the Thirty Years War , Windecken was severely damaged several times, particularly in 1634, on May 15, 1635 and 1638. The town hall was also affected. The mighty wooden columns inside the building date from the time of the subsequent reconstruction.

use

After the municipalities of Windecken mit and Heldenbergen merged to form the city of Nidderau on January 1, 1970 , in the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse , the building was no longer needed as a town hall. Today it houses the Nidderau city library.
