The Balchen Glacier is a furrowed glacier that flows west between the Phillips Mountains and the Fosdick Mountains to Block Bay in Marie Byrd Land , West Antarctica .
It was discovered on December 5, 1929 during the first Antarctic expedition (1928-1930) of the American polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd . Byrd named him after Bernt Balchen (1899–1973), chief pilot on this research trip .
