The Sankt Catharina Church is the church in Asel , a district of the municipality of Harsum in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony . The Roman Catholic Church belongs to the parish of St. Cäcilia with its seat in Harsum, in the Borsum-Sarstedt deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church, named after Saint Catherine of Alexandria , is located at Bischof-Johann-Straße 7.

history

The town of Asel was first mentioned in a document in 1211 and is one of the oldest towns in Hildesheim Abbey . Later she belonged to the tax forest office. A church has existed in Asel since at least the 15th century, and church records have been kept in Asel since 1664 .

In 1698, today's church was built under Pastor Eberhard Lothorius. A church clock was installed in 1700 and is now on display in the local history museum in Borsum . In 1768 the church was expanded, and in 1800 a sacristy was added. From 1972 to 1974 the church was renovated.

In 1981 the 18th century parsonage was demolished because Wilhelm Leiendecker, the last local pastor in Asel, retired in that year. Instead, the parish center "Petrus Canisius" was built and inaugurated on April 27, 1985 by the pastor of Harsum, Clemens Schönberner. The pastor from Harsum has looked after the church since 1981. Since December 1, 2002, the church has belonged to the then newly founded deanery Borsum-Sarstedt. Since summer 2008 the association “St. Catharina Asel eV “the preservation of the listed church and the community life. Since November 1, 2014, the church has belonged to the parish of St. Cäcilia in Harsum, which in addition to the churches in Asel and Harsum also includes the St. Matthew Church and St. Mauritius Chapel in Algermissen. The parish of St. Catharine in Asel was abolished in this context. In previous years, these churches had already formed the pastoral care unit Harsum-Algermissen.

Architecture and equipment

The east-facing baroque church is around 91 meters above sea level and has a roof turret . The oldest part of the church is now the west gable. A small bell in the tower bears the name Katerina and the year 1498. Above the entrance portal is the year 1768, the Christ monogram IHS and the chronogram SVB REVERENDO IOACHIMO IOSEPHO KLÖPPER CVRATO. The highlighted letters, which are also Roman numerals , result in numerical order (MDCCLVVVIII), also 1768. On the side walls there are pictures of the Way of the Cross . The statue of St. Katharina was made in Oberammergau and inaugurated on November 25, 2001. The altar , the organ and the Pietà carved from linden wood come from the former St. Nicholas' Chapel in Hildesheim , which had to be abandoned in 1803 in the course of secularization. The upper picture of the altar shows St. Nicholas of Myra , the patron saint of the Nikolaikapelle. The large picture of Jesus Christ on the cross , the statues to the left and right of it the holy Scholastica of Nursia and Benedict of Nursia . The organ is one of the oldest organs in Lower Saxony; it was probably built between 1550 and 1650. In 1884 it was rebuilt and enlarged by Hildesheim organ builder August Schaper , and in 1999 it was extensively renewed by the Hillebrand Organ Builders company. The canopy and pedestal of the Pietà were added in Asel. The font was made from Liebenburg marble in 1844 . It is a foundation of the Liebenburg pastor Theodor Krone, who was born in Asel in 1810. The interior also includes a wheel chandelier , a statue of the Virgin Mary and a confessional .

The statue of the Virgin Mary near the church was also donated by Theodor Krone in 1857 and stood on Lütchen Holte until 1969 . In Asel there are four processional crosses, which are stations of the Corpus Christi procession . A parish library as well as the kindergarten “St. Catharina “(a crèche and a kindergarten group) belong to the catchment area of ​​the church.

The broken wheel of martyrdom , one of the attributes of St. Catherine, has been Asel's coat of arms since 1926 .
