St. Matthäus is a Roman Catholic branch church in Algermissen , municipality of Algermissen in the district of Hildesheim , which belongs to the diocese of Hildesheim .

history

There are no traces of the previous buildings. A papal document from 1256, however, proves the existence of a church in Algermissen at that time. The rare patronage of the apostle and evangelist Matthew is striking .

The year on the triumphal arch between the choir and nave shows that today's building was completed in 1720. Exact files, plans and documents about the building, which is supposed to have been built by the builder Daniel Köppel , who worked in Goslar , have been lost. In a file in the former provincial archive in Hanover from 1724, the new church building is mentioned in connection with the new building of the rectory.

Since November 1, 2014, the church has belonged to the parish of St. Cäcilia , based in Harsum.

Building design

St. Matthew is a spacious baroque hall church with a square tower in the west and an octagonal choir closure in the east.

Furnishing

The original baroque furnishings by Ernst Dietrich Bartels have largely been preserved.

During renovation work in the first half of the 1970s, u. a. various figures, the chandelier and the Stations of the Cross. The pictures reappeared in the early 1980s and have been hanging in St. Godehard's Basilica in Hildesheim ever since . The whereabouts of all the other stolen items of equipment is still unclear.

Noteworthy are the ceiling paintings, which were completed in 1730 and reveal the hand of an unusual artist.

The chancel vault shows a picture of the Holy Trinity in its wooden paneling mirror and the four church fathers Ambrosius, Augustine, Gregory and Hieronymus in the cove corners . The mirror of the ship's vault contains the representation of the Ascension of Christ in an elongated central field, as well as Noah's Ark and the Ark of the Covenant in two round fields. In the coves above the middle of the long sides there are paintings of the feeding of Elijah by the angel and of the ascension of Elijah, on the corners there are pictures of the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Of the richly figured altars , the magnificent high altar creates the strongest impression. Its architectural structure made of oak and linden wood on two floors above the Altarmensa has a height of approx. 10.40 m and a width of 6.50 m. The image field on the main floor contains a painting of the Holy Trinity surrounded by angels and saints, among whom the church patron St. Matthew can be recognized. The arch of the picture field protrudes into the upper floor. In the center of this is the main figure of the altar, a Madonna standing on the crescent moon in a halo with the child holding the globe. The Manonne representation is counted among the most beautiful works of Hildesheim sculpture of the Baroque. Both altar storeys are surrounded by rich acanthus fillings with putti heads and figures. At the ends of the main cornice and above the arched doors on both sides of the altar there are free figures of the evangelists. The high altar is crowned by the triumphant Christ and two adoring angels.

Another very remarkable piece of equipment is the pulpit . It is attached to the south wall of the nave, veneered in reddish brown with inlay in yellowish wood. The inlaid parts show scratched and blackened interior drawings of the four evangelists on the walls. On the corner frames there are putti heads with strings of flowers in rhombic fields. A dove is inlaid in the bottom of the sound cover with a curved hood. The connecting plate between the pulpit and the sound cover shows the Annunciation, also in inlay. The coat of arms of the pen is in the picture frame: Vertically placed Vogelburg between two six-pointed stars, above the initials FOR; in the closing frieze the year 1721.

The confessionals and the carving of the cheeks are just as magnificent as they are worth seeing .
