Ernst Dietrich Bartels
Ernst Dietrich Bartels (* 4. October 1679 in Hannover , † 21st May 1762 in Hildesheim ) was a German carver of Baroque in Northern Germany. He mainly created church furnishings for Catholic and Protestant churches in the vicinity of the Hildesheim monastery .
Bartels came from a Lutheran family of craftsmen who had lived in Hildesheim Neustadt since 1619 . His father Daniel Bartels († 1696), also a carver, created the high altar of St. Andrew's Church from 1683 to 1686 (destroyed in 1945). Daniel Bartels lived in Hanover for only four years; During this time the son Ernst Dietrich was born.
After his first apprenticeship with his father, Ernst Dietrich Bartels became familiar with carving in northwestern Germany and the Netherlands as a traveling journeyman . In 1703 he settled in Hildesheim. In 1708 he married Anna Elisabeth Ernst, daughter of a Hanoverian painter († 1749). The couple had seven children.
Around 1740 Bartels handed the workshop over to his son Friedrich Bartels . In the last years of his life he worked as a provisional (administrator of buildings and assets) at St. Michael . He was also buried in this church.
