Guillermo Varela Olivera (born March 24, 1993 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan football player .

Career

Guillermo Varela already went through the youth teams of Peñarol Montevideo . The 1.80 meter tall defender Varela then came in the Clausura of the 2010/11 season to a use for Peñarol in the Primera División , when he made his debut in the top division against Racing on June 5, 2011 under coach Diego Aguirre . He was part of the squad of the Aurinegros in the following two seasons, but came to no further use. After he was able to convince in a trial training, Manchester United announced in early June 2013 that Varela would be committed to the upcoming season. He officially joined the association on June 11, 2013. He was the first new signing of the English club after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson , whom he was able to convince of his abilities in the aforementioned trial training. Successor David Moyes then agreed to the proposed transfer. The transfer fee is said to have been 2.4 million euros, with 1.8 million going to his club due to a 70% transfer rights stake and the rest to the player's agent Pablo Bentancur . In mid-July 2013, there was a one-year loan to the Argentine club Boca Juniors , which was ultimately not realized. Only in the middle of the winter season did he temporarily return to South America for personal reasons.

On August 19, 2013, he ran for the first time for the Manchester Under-21s when he was in the starting line-up in the 2: 4 defeat at Salford City Stadium against Liverpool. In the following years he played a total of 18 times in the U21 Premier League until his last game on May 14, 2014 in the 2013/14 season . Another league appearance for the U21s followed in the 2014/15 season. There are also three appearances in the Manchester Senior Cup and one in the Lancashire Senior Cup for Varela.

In September 2014 Varela moved just before the transfer window closed until the end of the 2014/15 season on loan to second team of Real Madrid . There he played 33 times (one goal) in Segunda B in the 2014/15 season.

He then returned to Manchester United. There he was added to the squad of eligible players for the 2015/16 Champions League season by coach Louis van Gaal .

On December 5, 2015, he made his debut on matchday 15 in a 0-0 draw against West Ham United in the Premier League when he came on for Paddy McNair in the 46th minute of the game . After Diego Forlán, Varela is only the second Uruguayan to play for Manchester United in club history. In the 2015/16 season he played a total of four top division games, one Champions League game and three Europa League matches. He didn't score a goal.

In addition, he played 13 times (two goals) in the league in the U21s in the 2015/16 season. He ran twice in the Lancashire Senior Cup and once in the Manchester Senior Cup.

On July 23, 2016, Varela was awarded to the German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt until the end of the 2016/17 season . On August 27, 2016, he made his debut in the 1-0 home win against FC Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga. During his second league appearance on the second match day of the season, he suffered a severe inner ligament injury, which caused him to be out for five months. In total, he played seven Bundesliga games (no goal) and three DFB Cup games for Hessen in the 2016/17 season .

In the week before the 2016/17 DFB Cup final, Varela was suspended on May 24, 2017 by Fredi Bobic , the club's sports director, and continued employment after the loan expired. Previously, he had violated the instructions of the trainer and doctors not to be tattooed. The tattoo was infected as a result.

On August 11, 2017, Varela, who had previously terminated his contract with Manchester United, signed a three-year deal with his former club Peñarol Montevideo . In January 2019 he returned to Europe and joined FC Copenhagen .

National team

Varela made his debut on June 6, 2012 in the game against the USA under coach Juan Verzeri in the Uruguayan U20 national team. He then belonged to the squad of the Uruguayan U20 selection at the U20 South American Championship 2013 in Argentina . There he played nine games, all of them in the starting line-up. In July 2013, he was runner-up with Uruguay at the U20 World Cup in Turkey in 2013 . During the tournament he played seven games. Varela has made a total of 26 international appearances in the U20. He didn't score a goal.

At the end of March 2016, Varela was appointed to the senior national team for the first time for the World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Peru . He made his debut on November 10, 2017 in a 0-0 friendly against Poland .
