Sten Michael Grytebust (born October 25, 1989 in Ålesund ) is a Norwegian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for the Danish Superliga club FC Copenhagen . He previously played for Aalesunds FK in the Norwegian Tippeligaen and until the end of the 2018/19 season for Odense Boldklub in Denmark. He made his debut for the Norwegian national team in 2013 .

Life

Grytebust was born in Ålesund, a small town in western Norway, and grew up on the neighboring island of Ellingsøy. His father is from Ellingsøy and his mother is Liberian. Grytebust has described former Liberian international George Weah as his grown-up idol.

Originally, Grytebust did not play as a goalkeeper. Due to an injury to the goalkeeper in his youth club Ellingsøy IL, he had to step in for him. A good performance resulted in him becoming the goalkeeper of choice for the team. In 2004, at the age of 15, he was approached by Aalesunds FK but decided to play in the Norwegian fourth division for the first team from Ellingsøy IL before joining Aalesund's youth team a year later. After two seasons in youth, Grytebust moved to Aalesund's first team before the 2008 season.

Career

The young Grytebust was the goalkeeper alongside Adin Brown, Andreas Lie and later Anders Lindegaard after joining Aalesund's first squad . In August 2009, following Lindegaard's loan, the team's coaching staff decided to make Grytebust's first team debut in place of Lie. He made his debut on August 22, 2009 against local rivals Molde FK and showed a good performance despite conceding three goals. After his debut, Aalesund signed, Lindegaard permanently and Lie left, leaving Grytebust as the second most important goalkeeper for the following season. He played in the first two rounds of the 2010 Norwegian Men's Football Cup .

In autumn 2009, the club announced to Grytebust that he would be the next goalkeeper of choice at the club. After the 2010 season, Lindegaard was bought by Manchester United and Grytebust was confirmed as the team's goalkeeper. Lindegaard stated that he believed Grytebust was ready for the job and that one day he would play for the Norwegian national team.

The 2011 season got off to a bad start when Aalesund lost to Fredrikstad due to a bad kick from Grytebust, among other things. After his saves against Viking and Stabæk , the team's head coach Kjetil Rekdal predicted that Grytebust would be the next national team goalkeeper. He delivered a stable performance throughout the season and was elected to the U23 national team along with teammate Peter Orry Larsen, although neither of them knew such a team existed. His performance was also praised by national goalkeeping coach Frode Grodås , who stated that Grytebust was "without weaknesses" . After the season ended with a win in the Norwegian soccer cup final in 2011 , Grytebust was named " Aalesunds Player of the Year " by the local newspaper Sunnmørsposten, alongside Daniel Arnefjord .

The 2012 season continued with Grytebust as the first goalkeeper for Aalesund. The results were mixed and he was criticized when Aalesund was eliminated from the national cup in the fourth round against Sandefjord . Grytebust had a bad pass and one goal. Later, during a game against SK Brann , he was again negligent with a goal kick that ended with another goal. In August the club reported that they had signed Andreas Lie as a substitute. Lie stated that he wanted to " play for a permanent place ".

Grytebust was first called up for the Norwegian national team in June 2013 and made his debut on June 11, 2013 in a friendly against Macedonia, when he replaced André Hansen a few minutes before the final whistle. He became the 150th player that Egil Olsen used during his time as national coach.

Grytebust left Aalesund in February 2016 and moved to the Danish Superliga club Odense BK on a free transfer. He was voted Danish Goalkeeper of the Year in both 2017 and 2018 before returning to FC København for free in May 2019 after not signing a new contract with Odense.
