Tabaré Ramos Ricciardi (born September 21, 1966 in Montevideo , Uruguay ) is a former American football player and current coach.
Tab Ramos ended his career in 2002. He played 81 times for the USA between 1988 and 2000 and scored 8 goals. 2005 was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
Youth and college
At the age of 11, Tab Ramos emigrated with his family from Uruguay to the USA. He played soccer for the Union Vecinal Youth Club in his native country. He moved to New Jersey , where he attended Saint Benedict's Preparatory School. The same school Claudio Reyna attended a few years later. His first soccer club in the USA was Thistle FC.
In 1984 he was drafted as a teenager by the NASL club Cosmos New York , but decided to study at North Carolina State University because the NASL was discontinued.
At NC State he played four years for the college selection and three times for the All-American team, where the best players of all colleges in the country are accepted for a year.
Professional career
In 1988 he became a senior international and left college. It wasn't until 2001 that he graduated in Spanish and Literature. He made his first international match on January 10, 1988 against Guatemala . He took part in the 1988 Summer Olympics. In 1990 and 1994 he was part of the US World Cup squad. In 1994 he was injured so badly at halftime in the round of 16 game against Brazil that he could not continue playing and the Brazilian Leonardo got the red card. With the US futsal team , he finished third in the first Futsal World Cup in 1989 .
Spain
From 1990 to 1996 he played in Spain for the third division club UE Figueres and the then second division Betis Sevilla . He then moved to Mexico for the UANL Tigres .
MetroStars
When the Major League Soccer was founded in 1996 , Tab Ramos returned to the USA and played for NY / NJ MetroStars . He was the first player to sign a contract with the MLS. In the United States he played 121 games and scored 9 goals.
Coaching career
Since the end of his career, Ramos has run a football school and sports park in Aberdeen Township, New Jersey . He is also the coach of the US U-20 national soccer team and in 2014 also looked after the U-23 national soccer team . In addition to these activities, he is also the assistant coach of the US national soccer team under Jürgen Klinsmann and Ramos is the technical director of the youth division within the USSF .
