Michael Windischmann (born December 6, 1965 in Nuremberg ) is a former American football player who played mainly in the position of a defender. During his playing days he played in the Major Indoor Soccer League and the American Soccer League . He is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
youth
Windischmann was born in Germany, but immigrated to the USA with his parents at the age of three. He attended Thomas A. Edison High School in New York City . He started playing soccer at the age of six. He did not play in school, as is usual in the USA, but in small New York clubs such as Blau-Weiss Gottschee, SC Gjoa and Queens United. After graduating from high school, he went to Adelphi University, which is located in Garden City . There he continued to play football. In 1986 he was inducted into the college's Athletic Hall of Fame.
Professional
After graduating from Adelphi University, he made the decision to continue playing soccer. At the time, the Major Indoor Soccer League was the most popular league for young soccer players. Windischmann decided to play for the Brooklyn Italians in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League. After two years he moved to MISL for the Los Angeles Lazers. After only one season he moved on and played from 1989 for the Albany Capitals in the American Soccer League.
At the end of 1990, Windischmann announced his retirement as an active football player.
National team
In 1985 Windischmann was part of the U-16 national team of the USA, which took part in the U-16 World Cup in the People's Republic of China . In the same year he also took part in the Universiade for the USA . In 1987 he was also a member of the USA team at the Universiade and also took part in the football tournament of the Pan American Games .
In 1984 he made his debut for the United States national soccer team . With the national team he also took part in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul . There he experienced a personal highlight when he equalized in the game against Argentina. In 1990 the USA played at the World Cup in Italy . Windischmann was the captain of the team. It was the first time in 40 years that the USA had participated in a World Cup finals.
