James "Jimmy" Banks (born September 2, 1964 in Milwaukee , † April 26, 2019 there ) was an American football player and coach.
The defender played for Milwaukee Wave from 1987 to 1993 in the leagues of the American Indoor Soccer Association and the National Professional Soccer League . He was a member of the US national soccer team at the 1990 World Cup . On April 26, 2019, at the age of 54, he died of complications from cancer in a hospital in his hometown of Milwaukee.
Player career
Youth and college
Banks played soccer in Milwaukee when he was young. After graduating from Custer High School, he first attended the University of Wisconsin-Parkside , later he moved to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee . There he was appointed to the selection of the best college soccer players in the USA.
Milwaukee Wave
After graduating from college, he was selected by the Kansas City Comets of the Major Indoor Soccer League and Milwaukee Wave by the American Indoor Soccer Association. He chose Wave and played there until 1993. In 1992 he was elected to the league's All-Star Team.
National team
On February 5, 1986, he made his debut for the USA national team. In total, he played 36 times for the national team. In 1990 he was part of the US squad for the World Cup in Italy .
Coaching career
In 1999 he became the coach of the soccer team at the Milwaukee School of Engineering , a private university in Milwaukee. He also played soccer for the Milwaukee Bavarians amateur team.
