John Joseph Doyle (born April 16, 1966 in San José, California ) is a retired American football player .
The defender was active in the United States and Europe from 1989 to 2000. After his career ended, he was a TV commentator, then he became an assistant coach at the San José Earthquakes . Since 2008 Doyle has been General Manager of the Earthquakes.
Player career
youth
Doyle attended Washington High School in Fremont, California and was active on its school team. In his senior year he won the championship with the team. Upon graduation, he held the record for most goals scored in the high school. In addition to school, he played for the Fremont City Youth Soccer Club.
He then attended the University of San Francisco and played for the local college soccer team. 1986 was named to the second All-American selection. In 1999 college inducted him into the Hall of Fame.
Beginning in the WSL
During his time in college, he played in the off-season for the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks in the former professional league Western Soccer League. 1989 was appointed to the WSL All-Star Team.
Change to Europe
In 1990 he signed a contract with the Swedish club Örgryte IS . After three years he moved to VfB Leipzig , which played in the first Bundesliga . At the end of the 1993/1994 season, Leipzig had to relegate and Doyle went back to the USA.
Return to the USA
He signed a contract with Major League Soccer, and was loaned by the organization to Atlanta Ruckus, since the MLS did not start playing until 1996. There Doyle advanced to the top performer of the A-League team . At the end of the season he was named Defender of the Year and reached the final of the play-offs with the team.
Prior to the start of the MLS's first season, Doyle was assigned to the San Jose Clash . He became the team's first player and captain. At the end of the first season, the best defender of the MLS was chosen. In 2000 he ended his career.
National team
Doyle was a member of the US team at the 1988 Summer Olympics . Also in the 1990 FIFA World Cup , he was in the team of the United States men's national soccer team .
Further career
After his playing days, Doyle worked as a TV and radio commentator. In 2004 he took over the post of assistant coach with the San José Earthquakes. He held this position until the end of the 2005 season when the Earthquakes migrated to Houston.
Since November 3, 2007 he has been General Manager at the Californians.
