Jérémy Mathieu (born October 29, 1983 in Luxeuil-les-Bains ) is a French football player on the position of a defender , who is mostly used as a central defender or left full -back. Mathieu has been playing for Sporting Lisbon since the 2017/18 season .

Club career

Career start at FC Sochaux

Born in 1983 in Luxeuil-les-Bains , Mathieu began his active football career at one of the largest clubs in the Franche-Comté region , not far from his hometown. At the club, which is about 50 kilometers from his hometown, he was only accepted into the youth department relatively late, at the age of twelve, and was active there until 2002. Since he was already 19 years old at the time, he made it relatively late to join the club's A and B team. Although he was part of the professional squad for a short time in the 2001/02 season , according to other sources also in 2000/01 , he only made his professional debut in the following season 2002/03 . In the same season he was also used six championship games of the B-team, for which he remained goalless. He finally made his professional league debut on August 3, 2002 in the first round match against CS Sedan (0-0), when he came onto the pitch shortly before the end of the game for Francileudo Silva dos Santos , known as Santos . He made his competitive debut for the professionals in the UEFA Intertoto Cup 2002 , where he played in all six of his team's games, was eliminated in one of the many semi-finals against Fulham and also scored a goal during the competition. In his second outing, a 2-1 win over Olympique Lyon in the fifth round, Mathieu was already in action for the full game and was able to establish himself as an important pillar in Sochaux's defensive line. His first professional league goal he finally scored on September 11, 2002 in a 2-2 draw against Stade Rennes , when he scored in the 73rd minute of the game to 2-0 and in the 84th and 89th minute two penalties by Olivier Monterrubio had to accept. By the end of the season, he was able to look back on a record of 23 championship appearances and four goals. In addition, he came with the team to the final of the Coupe de la Ligue , where they were clearly inferior to AS Monaco with 1: 4. Mathieu was in action for the full length of the game in this encounter; Overall, he brought it in the French league cup season 2002/03 on three missions.

Driven by the successes in the 2002/03 season, Mathieu made it in 2003/04 as a regular in the back team of FC Sochaux. With a fifth place in the final standings and as a league cup finalist, the trained defender took part in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup , where he made it to the third round with the team and was just eliminated from the current competition against Inter Milan . He was used in both games against Borussia Dortmund , where he also managed a goal in the 4-0 second leg win. Although he was absent for several rounds at the beginning of the season, he finally came into the current league operation from the eighth round, where he again advanced to fifth place with the team by the end of the season and thus another starting place in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup secured. In the official league events Mathieu was able to record 29 appearances in 2003/04, in which he again scored four goals. As in the previous season, he made it with the team in the league cup finals in 2003/04 , where they did better than a season before. In the game against FC Nantes , Mathieu's team, which was used throughout the game, only prevailed on penalties, where Mathieu was also able to convert his ball. He was also used in a meeting of the B-team in 2003/04, in which he also scored a goal. In the UEFA Cup, he made it with the team after successes over Stabæk Fotball and other teams in the group stage to the round of 32, where the team were eliminated by Olympiacos Piraeus with a total score of 2-0.

As a regular to Toulouse

In his generally last season with FC Sochaux, Mathieu was a regular in the team coached by Guy Lacombe in 2004/05 . He was able to record 34 of a total of 38 league appearances, where he scored two goals, among other things. At the end of the championship, however, it was only enough for the trained left winger and his team for tenth place in the table, which ruined a repeatedly hoped for UEFA Cup participation. Because of his performance at Sochaux, various internationally successful clubs became aware of the up-and-coming French. After all, he was courted by clubs such as Juventus Turin or the English clubs Newcastle United , Everton FC or Southampton FC . After Mathieu's decision to leave the club to look for new challenges, a move within France to Toulouse FC was soon confirmed. His contract with FC Sochaux would have run for about a year until 2006; other top French clubs such as Olympique Lyon , Olympique Marseille or AS Monaco were also interested in the then 21-year-old defensive talent. He signed a four-year contract with Toulouse and was supposed to replace Ludovic Clément , who had migrated to Montpellier HSC . Mathieu was initially used by Erick Mombaerts in Cléments position, where he also appeared as an alternative to the young talent Daniel Congré and the much more experienced Stéphane Lièvre in the position of left full- back. This position was also the most common he held during his time at Toulouse FC. Before that, he was often on the left flank and a few times in defensive midfield.

After joining the team in June 2005, Mathieu made his league debut for the violets from the city of Toulouse on July 30, 2005 against his ex-club, of all places, where he was used for the full game and a 1-0 with the team - could celebrate away success. At Toulouse he established himself very quickly as a regular player and was used in almost all of his 35 league appearances for the full 90 minutes. Throughout the season, Mathieu was also able to register as a goalscorer in two games. After a poor season's performance, the team ranked only 16th in the table behind Mathieu's training club, but was not affected by a possible relegation for most of the time. Also in the 2006/07 season , the full-back was an important support in the back team of Toulouse, which suffered 44 goals over the course of the season, but was rewarded for the good season performance in the end. With Toulouse he made it at the end of the season with 23 points behind champions Lyon and six points behind runners-up Marseille with 58 points in third place in the final table, which is mostly very close. For the team he was finally used in 32 championship games and scored two goals again. Compared to previous years, he was warned with more yellow cards this season ; ten pieces were shown to him in league events by the end of the season. At the end of this successful march, Mathieu was even rewarded with a nomination for the national team of his home country in the summer of 2007 , but could not record any commitment and in the same year had to be satisfied with a commitment to the B national team of France.

Injury bad luck at Toulouse and return as a regular

After only a few appearances at the beginning of the season and an appearance in the third qualifying round for the 2007/08 Champions League , Mathieu suffered an injury to his right foot in the early stages of the new season, which he occasionally broke , which then resulted in two operations. The regeneration phase lasted for the left winger up to and including March 2008, before he slowly found its way back into the game, but was also used in an encounter of the second combat team, for which he also scored in this game. After a short settling-in phase, Mathieu came back to the team better and better until the end of the season, although he did not follow up on the performances of previous years, as he mostly still played in pain. In his absence, Hérita Ilunga took over his position at short notice, but was replaced by him after Mathieu's return. With Toulouse he finished the 2007/08 season in 17th place in the table and was in the relegation battle until the end, which could be averted mainly by the return of Mathieu. In the summer transfer period, the Girondins Bordeaux was interested in the defensive player, who wanted to leave the club due to the lack of prospects of success, and presented the Toulouse with a contract with a transfer fee of the rumored 4.5 million euros. However, in this case, Toulouse President Olivier Sadran , who wanted to keep Mathieu, whose contract was still running for a year at the time, still wanted to keep the team. In addition, during this time and during the new season that began soon after, some Italian clubs such as AS Roma , AC Florence , US Palermo or Sampdoria Genoa were interested in the strong left winger, who will complete their next career step before the start of the preparatory phase of FC Toulouse wanted to.

After he failed, however, he had to start with the team in the 2008/09 season . Since the club's managers were previously unwilling to accommodate the player, Mathieu turned down an offered contract extension with Toulouse and resorted to a Bosman change , which enabled him to leave the club in the coming summer transfer period and to another Change team. This was then also regulated with the club officials, who had to agree to a change Mathieu at the end of the season. Due to the already fixed departure at the end of the championship, the left winger behaved correctly towards the club throughout the season and continued to show his performances. He was also able to build on his performance before his injury and was only eliminated from the game for a few games due to injury, where he was mostly replaced by his later successor in this position Cheikh M'Bengue or the aforementioned Daniel Congré. With the team he fought his way up to fourth place in the table, which qualified the team for a play-off starting place in the Europa League 2009/10 . Mathieu himself played 31 goalless championship games and, with his help, led the team to the semi-finals of the French Football Cup , where it ultimately lost 2-1 to eventual cup winners EA Guingamp .

Change to Spain

Contrary to expectations, Mathieu did not move to Bordeaux after the end of the season , but accepted an offer from the Spanish first division club Valencia . He was confirmed on June 10, 2009 as the first transfer Unai Emerys in the summer transfer period '09, where he should receive a three-year contract. The move was completed on July 1, 2009, officially making the left winger a member of the Valencia CF squad. The Frenchman finally made his league debut for Valencia on August 30, 2009 in the first round match of the 2009/10 season against Sevilla FC , where he won 2-0 with the team and was substituted on for Bruno at half-time . He made his actual competitive debut on August 27, 2009 in the Europa League qualifier against Stabæk Fotball , after he had previously been used in some test matches . Over the current season, he slowly developed into a regular player for the Spaniards and had to take a break from some games in December 2009 due to an adductor injury. Soon after his return, he suffered another injury when he tore his ankle ligament and was out for another two and a half to three months. Only in the last game of the season was Mathieu entrusted with a short assignment. Otherwise, by the end of the season, he had a total of 17 championship appearances and one goal, which he scored in the game against Athletic Bilbao on December 6, 2009 and helped his team to a 2-1 success and was unreachable behind FC Barcelona and Real Madrid on the third place in the table. Furthermore, he made five appearances in the Europa League, where the team made it to the quarter-finals and only narrowly eliminated from the current competition against the eventual winner of the Atlético Madrid competition.

In the 2010/11 season Mathieu was able to establish himself better in the team and no longer had to struggle with such bad luck with injuries as in the previous season. A muscle fiber tear, which made him pause for almost three weeks, remained the more serious injury. To date (as of March 31, 2011), the defensive line has been used in 21 league games and scored the goal to lead his team 1-0 on January 16, 2011 in a 2-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruña . He also participated with the result of the successful placement in pre-season at the UEFA Champions League of 2010/11 season , where he with the team to the second round penetrated and there against the FC Schalke 04 was eliminated from the competition. Mathieu was used in a total of seven Champions League games and gave in the first leg against Schalke an assist for the only goal of his team in this game.

FC Barcelona

For the 2014/15 season , Mathieu moved to FC Barcelona for € 20 million . He signed a four-year contract until June 30, 2018 with the option for an additional year; his release clause is EUR 50 million. At Barcelona, however, he was unable to assert himself permanently in central defense. After there had been disagreements between him and the club management as well as club-related media in the summer, he moved to Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2017 on a free transfer . With Barcelona, Mathieu won the Spanish Championship in 2015 and 2016, the Spanish Football Cup in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and the Champions League in 2015.

National team career

According to various sources, Mathieu is said to have already been in action with the French U-15 juniors and then went through all of France's existing junior selections. However, other sources assume that Mathieu only came to a national team in his home country with the U-18 selection. While he made seven international appearances for the U-18 juniors from 2000 to 2001, he was also in three games for the U-19 team from 2001 to 2002, where he also scored one goal. During his national team career, Mathieu's position always switched between defense and midfield. In 2002, Mathieu was called up to the U-21 squad in France , to which he ultimately belonged for several years. With his help, the team made it through the qualification for the U-21 European Football Championship in 2006 , where the French were eliminated in the semifinals against the eventual European champions, the Netherlands . Mathieu himself did not take part in the European Championship finals in Portugal and made six international appearances and two goals by 2006. In August 2007 Mathieu got his first call-up to the squad of the French national team , but was not used in the game against Slovakia , but brought it in this to a use in the B-Elf France. For this he also competed in an encounter against a Slovak B selection. The A and B teams from France played against the A and B selections of Slovakia on the same evening. After that, Mathieu was on the watch list for a longer period of time, but only made his debut for the French senior team in November 2011 in a 1-0 victory over the USA .

On October 1, 2016, he announced the end of his career as a player in the French national team. He had only played for Les Bleus five times .
