Vítor Manuel Afonso Damas de Oliveira (born October 8, 1947 in Lisbon , † September 10, 2003 ibid) was a Portuguese football player . He has long been the goalkeeper of Sporting Lisbon and the Portuguese national team . He was a heavy smoker and died of lung cancer in 2003 at the age of 55 in a Lisbon cancer clinic .

Career

Damas joined Sporting at the age of 13; In 1968 he had his first appearance in the first division. In 1975 he moved to Spain to Racing Santander , where he was in goal for Racing for five years. In 1980 he came back to Portugal and played for Vitória Guimarães until 1983 and one more season for Portimonense SC before returning to his home club in 1984. At Sporting, Damas retired on November 27, 1988, six weeks after he turned 41. He then worked as a coach and goalkeeping coach.

National team

Damas' career as a national player spanned 17 years; he played his first game in the Seleção on April 6, 1969 against Mexico . In the 17 years he was used 29 times in the Portuguese selection. During the Euro 1984 he was a substitute goalkeeper, also at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. There he came to two missions after regular goalkeeper Manuel Bento was injured. He played his last game for Portugal at this World Cup on June 11, 1986 against Morocco (1: 3).
