Álvaro Sobrinho
Álvaro de Oliveira Madaleno Sobrinho (* 1962 in Luanda ) is an Angolan businessman and banker.
Working life
Sobrinho's parents owned a bakery and real estate in Angola before the civil war (1975–2002). Sobrinho studied mathematics and statistics at the New University of Lisbon . After studying in Portugal , he began his career with the insurance company "World Trust".
In the early 1990s, he moved to the holding company Espírito Santo Financial Group , where he was CEO of Banco Espírito Santo Angola (BESA) until October 2012 . Álvaro Sobrinho was also elected President of the Planet Earth Institute (PEI) in London.
Investigations
Legal proceedings against him have been pending in Portugal since 2013. The Portuguese and Angolan authorities accuse him of money laundering and fraud . A year earlier, Sobrinho was released from his duties as CEO of BESA, but remained in the service of the bank as “Non-Executive Chairman”.
After the bankruptcy of the Portuguese parent company Espírito Santo International (ESI) in 2014, it was found that the BESA branch in Angola had accumulated unsecured loans totaling $ 5.7 billion (EUR 4.2 billion), 80% of which came from the Term of office should come from Sobrinho. The Angolan state has given a guarantee for the loans. Sobrinho is said to have given himself an unsecured loan of 200 million euros. Through his holding company Holdimo, Álvaro Sobrinho holds 29.9% of the Portuguese first division club Sporting Lisbon . Sobrinho also bought into the Portuguese media market. He now controls the publications Sol , Correio da Manhã and the business newspaper Jornal de Negócios .
In Switzerland, the ex-head of Banco Espirito Santo Angola Sobrinho has been under investigation since 2014 for moving assets of dubious origin to Switzerland - Credit Suisse is also involved . On August 13, 2014, the federal prosecutor's office opened criminal proceedings against Sobrinho for money laundering. To date, it has blocked assets of over 160 million Swiss francs in Switzerland.
In the island state of Mauritius , President Ameenah Gurib -Fakim had to resign in 2018 after a corruption scandal. In her private life, she made extensive use of a credit card from the Sobrinho-dominated Planet Earth Institute (PEI). Bribery was suspected as Sobrinho was looking for investment opportunities in Mauritius.
