Ameenah Firdaus Gurib-Fakim (born October 17, 1959 in Surinam, Mauritius ) is a Mauritian chemist and politician . She was President of Mauritius from June 5, 2015 to March 23, 2018 . She was the island nation's first female head of state.

Life

Gurib-Fakim ​​studied chemistry at the University of Surrey and the University of Exeter . She works as a university professor of chemistry in Mauritius and teaches at the University of Mauritius . Gurib-Fakim ​​was sworn in as President of Mauritius on June 5, 2015 . She belongs to the minority of Muslims.

Gurib-Fakim ​​had to resign in March 2018 after a corruption scandal in order to forestall her dismissal. She privately used a considerable amount of a credit card from the non-profit Planet Earth Institute (PEI), which was dominated by the controversial businessman Álvaro Sobrinho . Bribery was suspected as Sobrinho was looking for investment opportunities in Mauritius.

She is married to Anwar Fakim ​​and has two children.
