Prithvirajsing Roopun, GCSK (born May 24, 1959 in Quatre Bornes , British Mauritius ) is a Mauritian politician . He has been a member of the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) since it was founded and became non-party when he was elected President of Mauritius on December 2, 2019.

Prithvirajsing Roopun was born on May 24, 1959 in the town of Quatre Bornes in what was then the colony of British Mauritius. After successfully completing school and studying, he was admitted to the bar in 1986 . Before that he had already worked as a teacher at a secondary school from 1978 to 1980 and was a legal clerk ( Articled Attorney's Clerk ) from 1981 to 1985 . In parallel to his work as a lawyer and in the party, he worked from 1990 to 1995 as a part-time lecturer in the specialist "law" department at the University of Mauritius . From 1990 to 2005 Roopun also acted as a lecturer on the Board of Examiners Council of Legal Education , the Mauritian examination committee of the Council for Legal Education (see also Council of Legal Education ).

Political career

He was also politically active at a young age. He was one of the founding members when the split between the leaders of the two main parties of the coalition government (the MMM founder Paul Bérenger and the leader of the Parti Socialiste Mauricien (PSM), Harish Boodhoo ) formed the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) in 1983. emerged. In 1995 he appeared as a candidate for the MSM in the parliamentary elections in constituency 15 (La Caverne and Phoenix), but did not make it into the National Assembly. Under the then President Kailash Purryag , he became Minister for Social Integration and Economic Strengthening and held this office even after Purryag's departure under the interim president Monique Ohsan Bellepeau and then for over a year and a half (until January 24, 2017) under the president Ameenah Gurib-Fakim . After he had already taken over the interim management of the Ministry of Art and Culture a month earlier (from December 21, 2016 to January 23, 2017) , Roopun was confirmed in his office on January 24, 2017 under Ameenah Gurib-Fakim and then under Barlen Vyapoory until November 12, 2019. After leaving parliament in 2019 to run for president of Mauritius, the married father of four was elected new president by the National Assembly on December 2, 2019 and sworn into office on the same day. On the same day, Le Réduit , the official residence of the President, announced the appointment of Roopun as Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GCSK). His official title is now His Excellency Prithvirajsing Roopun, Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean .
