Paul Raymond Bérenger (born March 26, 1945 in Quatre Bornes ) is a Mauritian politician . He was Prime Minister of Mauritius from September 30, 2003 to July 5, 2005 .

Paul Bérenger comes from a French family that has lived in Mauritius for generations. After studying in France and Wales , he returned to Mauritius, where he worked as a journalist and trade unionist. He was one of the founders and for decades chairman of the socialist party Mouvement Militant Mauricien , for which he was first elected to parliament in 1976. Since the 1980s he represented a. a. took more moderate positions in the debate about the nationalization of the sugar industry and promoted the free market economy during his reign, so that he is only taken for a socialist in name.

Before Bérenger became Prime Minister, he was Foreign Minister from 1991 to 1993 and 1995 to 1997 and Minister of Finance from 2000 to 2003 .
