Pravind Kumar Jugnauth (born December 25, 1961 in La Caverne near Vacoas-Phoenix , Mauritius ) is a Mauritian politician who has been Prime Minister of Mauritius since 2017 and is also the country's finance minister. He is currently chairman of the Mouvement Socialiste Militant (MSM), which has had a majority in the National Assembly since December 2014. He belongs to the Indian majority of the island nation and is the son of former Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth .

Life

He is the only son of Sir Anerood Jugnauth and Sarojini Ballah. Jugnauth studied law at the University of Buckingham . He joined the MSM in 1987.

Since 2000 he has held various positions in government and opposition. From 2000 he was Minister of Agriculture, until 2003 Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister from 2003 to 2005. While he served as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister in the cabinet of Navin Ramgoolam from 2010 to 2011 , he was also MP for the 8th constituency. He left the coalition government and was appointed leader of the opposition in September 2014 and then served as Minister of Technology, Communication and Innovation after the victory of the opposition alliance LEPEP in the 2014 parliamentary elections from December 2014 to July 2015. He has been Finance Minister again since May 2016. On January 23, 2017, he was appointed Prime Minister by his father Anerood Jugnauth after his resignation.

In 2010 he was sentenced to one year in prison in the wake of a corruption scandal. However, he appealed to the Supreme Court of Mauritius and won his appeal there.

Jugnauth is married and has three children.
