Sir Anerood Jugnauth ( Devanagari : अनिरुद्घ जगन्नाथ, Aniruddh Jagannāth; born March 29, 1930 in Vacoas-Phoenix ) was President , three times Prime Minister and Interior Minister of Mauritius . He has been Minister of Defense since January 2017 . He belongs to the Indian majority of the island nation.

Life

He was Prime Minister from 1982 to 1995 when he was voted out of office. As leader of the Militant Socialist Movement , he became Prime Minister again in 2000. In 2003 he took over the office of President of Mauritius, his term of office ended in 2012. From 2014 to 2017 he was Prime Minister of the country in his third term. After his resignation he was succeeded by his son Pravind Jugnauth , in whose cabinet he holds the office of Defense Minister.

Sir Anerood took an active role in the negotiations for the independence of Mauritius in the 1960s.
