José Vitor dos Santos Peseiro (born April 4, 1960 in Coruche ) is a Portuguese football coach .
Coaching career
Peseiro, who completed the same coaching course with José Mourinho , began his career in 1992 at União de Santarém, where he stayed until 1994. After two years at União de Montemor and three years at Oriental, he finally moved to Nacional Funchal in 1999 , which was then playing in the Portuguese third division. With Madeira, Peseiro rose to the second division in his first season, only to make the promotion to the top Portuguese division perfect after two more years . After these outstanding performances, Peseiro received an offer from the Spanish top club Real Madrid in the summer of 2003 where he was assistant coach behind Carlos Queiroz . However, after Real Madrid fell short of the set goals and the contracts with the coaching staff were dissolved after just one season, Peseiro moved back to his home country and to Sporting Lisbon .
At Sporting, those in charge put a lot of trust in Peseiro and hoped to break through the supremacy of rivals FC Porto with him . Despite a bad start to the 2004/2005 season, Peseiro and his team made it to first place. However, they lost this to Benfica Lisbon two game days before the end of the season , so that at the end of the season Sporting Lisbon even landed third in the Portuguese championship and thus qualified for the third round of the UEFA Champions League qualification. Although Peseiro missed the championship, he managed to achieve a respectable success by reaching the UEFA Cup final in 2005 . Sporting, which was able to reach an international final for the second time in its club history , eliminated clubs such as Newcastle United , Feyenoord Rotterdam and AZ Alkmaar , but ultimately failed, despite a 1-0 lead, 1: 3 to CSKA Moscow .
After the 2005/2006 season began unsatisfactorily for Sporting with the elimination in the Champions League qualification, Peseiro was dismissed on October 18 and later moved to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia . Peseiro stayed with Al-Hilal until January 10, 2007. From May 2007 to May 2008 he was under contract with the traditional Greek club Panathinaikos Athens .
In July 2008 he took over the coaching position at the Romanian first division club Rapid Bucharest. There he was already on leave of absence on October 3, 2008 after leaving the UEFA Cup and took on other duties in the club until January 2009. On February 18, 2009, Peseiro succeeded the resigned Nasser Al Johar as Saudi Arabia's national coach .
After the opening defeat at the soccer Asian Cup in 2011, he was dismissed as national coach of Saudi Arabia without notice.
On June 8, 2012, Peseiro was officially announced as the new head coach of Sporting Braga . There he signed a contract for 2 years. In his first year he won the League Cup , but his team only finished fourth in the league and missed the UEFA Champions League play-offs. Thereupon he agreed with the club to terminate the contract.
On January 19, 2016, Peseiro succeeded Julen Lopetegui at FC Porto . The contract period was one and a half years.
For the season 2018/19 returned Peseiro returns to Sporting Lisbon.
