Valery Georgievich Karpin ( Russian Валерий Георгиевич Карпин ; Estonian Valeri Karpin; born February 2, 1969 in Narva , Estonian SSR ) is a former Russian football player and today's football coach and head of sports.
He now lives in Vigo and is a businessman and sponsor of several sports teams. In 2003, Karpin took on Estonian citizenship based on the principle of descent and in return renounced Russian citizenship .
At club level, Karpin played for Fakel Voronezh (1989), Spartak Moscow (1990–1994), Real Sociedad San Sebastián (1994–1996 and 2002–2005), Valencia CF (1996–1997) and Celta Vigo (1997–2002) . In 1999 Karpin was voted Russian Footballer of the Year. He announced the end of his career in summer 2005.
Karpin also has a big name on the international stage: After playing for the CIS once without scoring a goal, he succeeded 17 times in 72 games for Russia between 1992 and 2003, including the first goal for independent Russia. His major tournaments were the World Championships in 1994 and 2002 and the European Championships in 1996 .
In 2007, Karpin co-named the Karpin-Galicia cycling team .
On August 8, 2008, Karpin became General Director of Spartak Moscow . On April 15, 2009 he dismissed coach Michael Laudrup and took over this position temporarily. On April 18, 2011, Karpin resigned from his position as the club's trainer, but initially retained his position as sports director. However, he reconsidered his decision and only left office after the 2011/12 season. His successor was Unai Emery from Spain . After he was released in November 2012, Karpin took over the post of head coach, initially on an interim basis and later permanently. On March 18, 2014, he was given leave of absence after a series of defeats.
In July 2015 Karpin was signed by the Russian second division promoted Torpedo Armavir .
