Beginnings

Mathias Normann, born in Svolvær in Lofoten , played in the youth teams of Svolvær IL and FK Lofoten . At the latter club he was promoted to the first team during the 2012 season at the age of 16.

FK Bodø / Glimt

On February 1, 2013 Normann moved to the second division FK Bodø / Glimt , where he was assigned to the youth team. He made his debut on April 24, 2014 in a 5-0 cup win against Tverlandet G-98 , when he came on for Yaya Sané in the 78th minute . This was his only bet for the Superlaget in the 2014 game year.

In order to gain match practice in men's football, he joined the lower-class club Alta IF in January 2015 on loan for the entire 2015 season . For the club from Northern Norway he played regularly in midfield and collected 16 league appearances in which he scored two goals. In December 2015 he returned to FK Bodø / Glimt.

At FK Bodø / Glimt - the club had meanwhile been promoted to the highest Norwegian league - he established himself as a regular in the 2016 season. He scored his first two goals on April 27, 2016 in a 6-0 cup win against Mo IL . He played a total of 33 competitive games this season, in which he scored three goals. As a table penultimate, however, he had to accept relegation to the second division with his club.

Despite the relegation and the interest of several first division clubs, Normann initially stayed with Glimt in the 2017 season , as no club wanted to accept the club's transfer demands. Normann publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the refused move, but was still used regularly at the start of the season. Due to a groin injury, he had to take a break for several weeks from June 2017. By then he had completed eight season games for FK Bodø / Glimt.

Brighton & Hove Albion and Molde FK

On July 20, 2017, Mathias Normann moved to the English first division club Brighton & Hove Albion for a transfer fee of 1.4 million euros , where he signed a three-year contract. He had already returned to Norway on loan for around a month, where he joined the first division club Molde FK by the end of the year . He made his debut on August 27 in the 2-1 cup win against Kristiansund BK when he came on for Isak Ssewankambo at half-time . He did not make the final leap into the starting lineup and played eight competitive games by the end of the season.

On January 26, 2018, Molde FK extended the loan deal until July 2018. In this 2018 season he developed as an important regular player under head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær . On May 7, 2018 (8th matchday), he scored his first goal for his loan club in a 2-2 draw against Sarpsborg 08 FF . By his return, he made ten league games in which he scored one goal and three assists.

For the Seagulls he only played in the U23 in the 2018/19 season. Until his move in January 2019, he had played 13 competitive games for the reserve.

FK Rostov

On January 28, 2019, Normann moved to the Russian first division club FK Rostow for a transfer fee of 1.7 million euros . On March 3, 2019 (18th matchday) he made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Yenisei Krasnoyarsk and prepared the goal for his new club. He quickly established himself as a regular player and made nine appearances in the remaining 2018/19 season .

He retained his status as an important regular in the 2019/20 season . On September 16, 2019 (9th matchday), he shot his team in the home game against Achmat Grozny with his first league goal to a 2-1 victory.

National team

In February 2013 he played two international matches for the Norwegian U17 national team . A year later he was used once for the U18 . In October 2017 he was on the pitch in a U21 game.

In August 2019, Mathias Normann was nominated for the first time for the Norwegian national team by head coach Lars Lagerbäck as part of upcoming qualifying matches for the European Championship 2021 . He made his debut on September 5 in a 2-0 home win against Malta , when he came on for Stefan Johansen in the 76th minute . In his second international match against Romania on October 15, 2019, he prepared Alexander Sörloth's equalizer in the 92nd minute of the game .
