Alta Idrettsforening is a sports club from the northern Norwegian town of Alta . It was founded in 1927 under the name Elvebakken IL . There is an athletics , skiing , volleyball, handball and soccer department . The last two departments mentioned are best known, especially since they also play higher class. After relegation in 2012, the Alta IF men's football team is back in the third-class Oddsenligaen . The games take place in the Finnmarkshallen. The handball games take place in the old swimming pool, which was renovated and rebuilt in 2015.

In 2006 and 2007 the soccer team played in the 2nd division . After the rise in 2007 succeeded with the 14th place in the 2008 season of relegation. In the Norwegian Cup competition , the team reached the 3rd round in each of the last two years. Since 2014 the club has been playing in the 1st division again .
