history
The station was built on the South Wales Main Line in the early 1970s . There were numerous reasons for a new station at Stoke Gifford: the trains between London and South Wales no longer had to take the time-consuming detour via Bath and Bristol Temple Meads from Swindon , a large car park could be built and the population of the northern suburbs increased rapidly to (especially since the satellite town of Bradley Stoke was built ).
The station was opened on May 1, 1972. The station building was architecturally inconspicuous, a single low-rise building on the north side of the tracks with a footbridge to the two platforms. On July 1, 2001, a new two-storey building was opened, no longer at the western end of the complex, but a little more towards the center. The pedestrian bridge was equipped for the disabled with the installation of elevators. The renovation cost Network Rail over £ 4 million. In January 2007 the construction of a third platform began, which was put into operation in May 2007. In 2008/09 the capacity of the station is to be increased again with the construction of a fourth platform.
