Marco Alexandre Saraiva da Silva (born July 12, 1977 in Lisbon ) is a former Portuguese football player and today's coach. The right-back Silva played for several mostly second- to third-rate clubs in Portugal during his playing days . He spent the longest time at Estoril Praia . As a coach, he was most recently under contract in the Premier League at Everton from 2018 to 2019 .

Player career

Marco Silva grew up in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, where he played for Belenenses Lisbon in his youth. He made his professional debut in the 1996/97 season, but was only used once. Belenenses finally took 13th place. He then moved to Atlético CP, also based in Lisbon, in the third division.

Later in his career, other clubs in the third and second division followed. Silva only played once more in the Primeira Liga when he was loaned to Campomaiorense in 1999/2000 . Silva spent the last years of his career at Estoril Praia . In 2011 he decided to end his career at the age of 34.

Coaching career

Estoril Praia

In the 2011/12 season, Silva initially worked as a sports director at Estoril Praia. A bad start to the season led to the dismissal of the then coach Vinícius Eutrópio in October . Silva took over the post of head coach and helped the team directly to promotion to the Primeira Liga in its first season.

In the 2012/13 season, the newcomer managed a surprising fifth place under Silva. In the following season 2013/14 Estoril Praia thus took part in the qualification for the Europa League. The team made it into the group stage. There they were eliminated from the bottom of the group without a win. In the league you could improve by one place compared to the previous year. Among other things, they won away against FC Porto, which no team in the league has achieved since 2008.

Sporting Lisbon

On May 23, 2014 Silva signed a four-year contract with Sporting Lisbon . He replaced his compatriot Leonardo Jardim , who went to AS Monaco . In the Primeira Liga 2014/15, Sporting finished third. With a 3-1 win on penalties against SC Braga , Silva's team won the Taça de Portugal that same year , Sporting's first title since 2008. Nevertheless, Silva was sacked towards the end of the season. The reason: He should not have worn the official club outfit at the cup game against FC Vizela.

Olympiacos Piraeus

In July 2015, Silva then signed with the Greek record champions Olympiacos Piraeus . His first season as a coach abroad went really well. With 82 points and only 16 goals conceded, Olympiakos was able to defend the championship title in Greece . In the cup they lost the final against AEK Athens with 1: 2. In the Champions League you were eliminated as a third party. In the sixteenth finals of the Europa League they lost to RSC Anderlecht . After just one season again, Silva resigned from the Olympiakos coaching position for personal reasons.

Hull City

After a six-month break, Silva signed with the English first division club Hull City in January 2017 . He should initially stay until the end of the season to save the team from relegation. There was a sporting upswing under Silva. The Tigers moved into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup , where they only failed in the second leg at the English record champions Manchester United . Even in the league you could win several times directly after Silva's commitment. Nevertheless, the team was relegated at the end of the season. Silva's contract was not renewed.

Watford

In the summer of 2017, Silva signed a two-year contract with Watford FC. The season started well, Silva mostly played with an offensive 4-3-3 formation. At the beginning, a 3: 3 against Liverpool succeeded . They later defeated Arsenal at home 2-1 and advanced to the Champions League ranks. Through this success, the Everton FC became aware of Silva in November and tried to lure him away from his contract. The Toffees had just fired their coach Ronald Koeman and were looking for a successor.

Silva stayed with Watford and Everton signed the former England coach Sam Allardyce instead . In the months that followed, Watford FC's performance began to falter. Silva has been accused of not bothering properly since the Everton thing. In January 2018, he was fired after losing to Leicester City .

Everton

For the 2018/19 season, Silva signed a three-year contract with Everton FC . Silva spent the equivalent of almost 100 million euros on new players in the summer. Among other things, he brought Lucas Digne , André Gomes and the Brazilian Richarlison , whom he had already signed at Watford. Silva also got off to a good start to the season at Everton. The new signing Richarlison scored twice in the first game. In the middle of the season, the Toffees left many points and Silva threatened to be fired again. With a series of home wins against top teams like Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United, eighth place could be achieved in the end, which narrowly missed the Europa League.

In the 2019/20 season, large sums of money were again spent on new players. This time they brought Moise Kean , who is considered a great talent, among others . But the success failed again. In the meantime, the Toffees were on a relegation zone. After a 5-2 defeat in the Merseyside Derby against Liverpool, Silva was sacked.
