The Estádio Nacional de Brasília Mané Garrincha ( German : National Stadium of Brasília Mané Garrincha ) is a football stadium built for the 2014 World Cup in Brasília . It is the most expensive stadium built for the World Cup with a total cost of more than 450 million euros.
Construction phase
The stadium was built on the remains of the Estádio Mané Garrincha , which was demolished in 2010 down to the foundation walls and part of the grandstand. Like its predecessor, it was named after the Brazilian national soccer player and two-time world champion Mané Garrincha .
In order to convert the old multi-purpose stadium into a pure football stadium, the playing field was lowered and made smaller. In the area of the former running track, additional grandstands were built that extend right up to the pitch. A retractable roof enables use regardless of the weather.
The National Stadium was the venue for the opening game of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and seven games of the 2014 World Cup. With a capacity of 70,064, it was the second largest stadium in the tournament.

Use after the World Cup
In 2015, only two football matches were played in the stadium due to the high maintenance costs of around 180,000 euros a month. The stadium area has since been used as a bus depot and the arena premises as offices for 400 officers.
