Location and surroundings

The Laurentiuskirche has the address Alter Schulplatz 5 and is located between the market square and the castle in a churchyard. Right next to the church you will find the evangelical parish hall (formerly rectory, 1806) and the new rectory (1973) behind it in the church garden.

description

Interior view of the choir

The Laurentiuskirche is a village church on a medieval defense tower. It has a high Gothic choir with a straight yoke and a 5/8 end , which is painted entirely in Gothic style. A late Gothic reticulated sacristy is attached to the choir on the right . The nave was extended several times in the Renaissance and Baroque periods up to the interior version of a transverse church and some of it still has baroque paintings . The outside of the church tower has been redesigned historically.

Building history

The building history of the Laurentiuskirche begins with the tower, the foundation walls of which may date from the 12th century. A small church will have attached to it to the east. A stately choir was added to the 14th century church around 1350. From then on, the length of the building was determined by the tower and choir. The late Gothic sacristy was added around 1530.

Portal with the apostles Paul and Peter

Around 1582 the nave was widened to the south . In 1600 there was a further enlargement on the south side to the west. At that time the three Renaissance portals were built, of which the main portal, which is slightly angled in accordance with the urban situation, is more conspicuous: in front are the life-size apostle figures Paul and Peter, the lid bears the four evangelist symbols at the corners and the center is an empty tomba and right at the top crowned the risen Christ. A round stair tower was erected in the southwest.

In 1785 the nave was extended again for the growing community, this time to the north. At the same time, the surrounding walls were raised and space was created for the large circumferential gallery . Since then, the tower has been located with its foundation walls in the cube of the nave.

In 1856 the Laurentius Church was redesigned inside and out by Christian Friedrich von Leins . It was then that the tower received its beveled edges and the characteristic tall lantern .

From 1956 to 1961 the interior was renovated by the architect Klatte, during which on the one hand the Gothic wall paintings in the choir were exposed, but on the other hand the neo-Gothic parts of the pulpit cover and altar were removed or replaced. The chairs and the technology were also refurbished. When the exterior was renovated in 1970, the roof was re-covered.

In 1998 an exterior renovation heralded another renovation of the church. In 2004 the architects Kreuz + Kreuz renewed the church. The surfaces in the nave were straightened, the electrical engineering and lighting were redesigned, the stalls were revised and a new heating system was installed, which is connected to the gas heating system shared with the parish hall.

Furnishing

In the choir of the Laurentiuskirche there are several commemorative plates of the local rule from the families of the Nippenburg and Varnbüls. Two wooden figures represent Laurentius and George. The choir walls are painted in Gothic style with scenes from the story of the saints. A stone baroque crucifix stands in the apex of the choir. In the nave, next to the organ, there is an epitaph from 1595 with a panel depicting the resurrection. Next to it is the Rensch organ, newly built in 1961, with a partially baroque prospectus .

organ

The first organ from 1738 originally stood in the choir, on a specially built gallery. It has had its current location on the west gallery since 1856. The beautiful baroque prospect today surrounds the one built in 1962 by Richard Rensch (Lauffen / N.). The instrument has 21 stops on two manuals and a pedal .
