history
The place was probably founded by the Alemanni and came under Frankish rule around 500 AD . In the period from 500 to 900 Hessigheim belonged to the Enzgau. It was first mentioned in a document in the Lorsch Codex in 774 . In 779, Count Kunibert gave all of his property in the Main and Neckar region to the Fulda monastery, including property in Hessigheim. The period from 900 to 1200 was marked by belonging to the Ingersheim county.
In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Besigheim rule and shared their fortunes; so it was owned by the margraviate of Baden , partly in the Electoral Palatinate . In 1595, Württemberg acquired the rule. Administratively, the place belonged to the Oberamt Besigheim , from 1938 to the district of Ludwigsburg .
The historical past was mainly determined by monasteries, especially Hirsau monastery. Since no viticulture was possible in the Black Forest, the monks needed property on the Neckar, whose wine was already famous in the Middle Ages. For centuries, the wine growers in Hessigheim marketed their wines themselves, until the Weingärtnergenossenschaft Hessigheim eG was founded in 1950, which merged with the Weingärtnergenossenschaft Besigheim in 1972.
During the community reform in the 1970s, when incorporation into Besigheim was discussed, the community was able to maintain its independence. Since then, however, it has been a member of the Besigheim municipal administration association. With around 2200 inhabitants, Hessigheim is the smallest municipality in the district.
