General Eduard von Kallee

Eduard Kallee , from 1852 von Kallee , (born February 26, 1818 in Ludwigsburg , † June 15, 1888 in Stuttgart ) was a German major general and archaeologist .

Life

From 1841 Kallee was adjutant to the Württemberg chief of staff and, as first lieutenant, received the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown and the associated nobility in 1852 . He also wore the Prussian Red Eagle Order IV class, the Knight's Cross of the Baden Order of the Zähringer Löwen , the Knight's Cross of the Hessian Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous and later the Commander's Cross of the Frederick Order .

He married Malwine Majer, and on December 18, 1854 their son Richard Kallee , who later became the parish priest of Feuerbach, was born . As early as 1860, Kallee was promoted to colonel on the basis of extraordinary signs of confidence from King Wilhelm I , whose illegitimate son he is considered to be . “The brilliantly gifted, urbane and successful General von Kallee, favored by the king with a clarity that was tantamount to an acknowledgment of paternity and precisely for that reason little appreciated by the queen and the crown prince, especially the rejuvenated likeness of the king, had a natural scientific inclination and talent together, ”wrote the historian Hansmartin Decker-Hauff about the young officer.

His mother Juliana Eleonora Kallee, b. Schüßler, born in Stuttgart and died there in 1839, was married to the castellan in the Royal Palace, Christian Wagner, and his second marriage to the widowed Queen's court gardener, Gottlieb Kallee. It is said that the king "patted young Kallee on the shoulder when he announced his decision to become an officer (and not a painter)," which he found to be an extraordinary sign of favor, because "the king did not easily touch anyone, himself Princes could rarely boast that he shook hands with them. "

As major general he reluctantly took part in the battles at Tauberbischofsheim and Gerchsheim. Although the Prussians were able to push back the Wuerttembergians thanks to their superior firepower, as the Wuerttemberg general staff chief he described the battle at Tauberbischofsheim as "not unfortunate" because the task had been solved despite some mistakes that had been made.

From 1869 until the end of his life he devoted himself to literary, artistic and archaeological studies, especially research on the Roman Limes . He was an early excavator at the castles in Köngen , Benningen , Schirenhof and Unterböbingen . He chose the sites for his excavations primarily through a combination of military-strategic considerations. At the Limestor Dalkingen , which he interpreted as a field guard at the time , and in Rottenburg am Neckar , he made great contributions to the knowledge of his homeland's Roman past.

At the beginning of the 20th century, near the Tübingen mountain cemetery on Galgenbergstrasse, the " Kalleehöhe " was set up and named after Eduard von Kallee, a public viewing point and cultural landscape with orchards and dry stone walls.
