The field guards were the smallest closed sections of the outposts .

For their part, they secured themselves through advanced double posts (in the cavalry the so-called vedettes ) and non-commissioned officers . The immediate securing of the resting part of the field guards was carried out by the snarling posts or also by double posts .

The infantry field guards were half a platoon or a whole platoon , and the cavalry squad was regularly a platoon.
