A kidney table is a table typical of the 1950s with an asymmetrically shaped, (often patterned) formica-coated or mosaic-covered surface and three slanted, thin table legs.

In addition to the kidney shape, the triangular shape was also very popular

history

The kidney shape was a predominant design feature of the 1950s in many areas . The term “kidney table age” is sometimes used today as a synonym for the 1950s. The cause of the kidney shape is a turning away from the rigidity of National Socialism throughout all areas of society . It initially expressed itself in the field of architecture, especially small pavilions , stairs, ceiling cladding, etc. deviated from symmetry and took on free forms. This new way of thinking later affected all consumer goods. After a few years, kidney shapes disappeared and the furniture formally approached the pre-war Bauhaus , pre-war modernism.

Retro trend

In addition to the kidney table, typical pieces of furniture from the 1950s in Germany include the bag lamp , the tulip lamp and the cocktail chair . In 2010, kidney-shaped tables had become cult objects, and high prices were charged at flea markets and in antique shops. Furniture stores also recognized the trend and sell modern versions of these pieces of furniture.
