A bag lamp is a typical electric floor, table or wall lamp with a bag-shaped, colored lampshade for the 1950s . The "typical" bag lamp has three shades, but there are also many versions with only two shades. The lamp stand, which is made of brass or brass-colored, almost always rests on a round or kidney-shaped base, which is also brass-colored, black or sometimes made of wood . In most cases there are flexible arms between the bags and the lamp stand. The bags are made of plastic, stiffened fabric or paper, so-called elephant skin . In the few years in which bag lamps were produced, an almost infinite number of variations emerged, which is why the description of the properties only describes the most typical appearance. A shortcoming of many of these lamps: After some time of use, they stewed due to the heat of the incandescent lamps (sometimes dangerous!), And the typical brown spots formed on the shades (mostly round or oval). In the meantime, most of the specimens are no longer in use and surviving umbrellas , especially those with original scorched umbrellas, increase significantly in value, especially if the bags are of different colors.

In addition to the bag lamp, typical pieces of furniture from the 1950s in Germany include the tulip lamp , the kidney table and the cocktail armchair .
