Achi-Su ( Russian Ачи-Су́ ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia with 1679 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is about 40 km as the crow flies south-southeast of the republic capital Makhachkala on the eastern edge of the Greater Caucasus . The center of the village is about 5 km from the coast of the Caspian Sea , not far from the left bank of the Achisu river, which gives it its name . About 3 km to the east, at the foot of the mountains, closer to the coast, there is another district (until the 1990s, it was an independent settlement near the Atschi train station ).
Atschi-Su belongs to the Karabudachkentski Rajon and is located a good 10 km southwest of its administrative center Karabudachkent . It is the seat and only locality of the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) Possjolok Achi-Su. The settlement is mostly inhabited by Dargin people.
history
The place was created in the 1930s in connection with the development of oil deposits in the area. In 1938, as a workers' settlement, it was given the status of an urban-type settlement, which it retained even after the oil deposits in this area were largely exhausted in the 1950s. With the granting of city rights to Isberbasch, which is just under 20 km to the south-east, in 1949 Atschi-Su was placed under its administration. In the 1960s, the spelling Achisu ( Ачису ; also Achissu ) became official. As part of the municipal administrative reform in Russia, the settlement was reassigned to the Karabudachkentski rajon in 2006 and the original spelling was restored.
