Akhty ( Russian Ахты ; Lezgian Ахцагьар , Achzahar ) is a village (selo) in Dagestan with 13,405 inhabitants (14 October 2010) mainly lesgischer nationality.

geography

Akhty is located in the south of Dagestan, 254 km from Makhachkala and 102 km from the nearest railway station Beliji on the Makhachkala - Baku route at the confluence of Akhty-Chai in the Samur at an altitude of about 1050  m . The village is the administrative center of the Rajons Achtynski and Selsowets (municipality) Selsowet Achtynski.

Mineral spring

A mineral spring is located five kilometers southwest on the left bank of the river in the gorge. The Akhtys springs contain hydrogen sulfide , radon , iodine and bromine . The temperature of the springs varies depending on the season and is between 38 ° C and 68 ° C. The health resort of Akhty was built around the springs .

history

The exact date of the establishment of the settlement is unknown. Local historians refer to the middle of the first millennium BC. BC as the most likely period. During the Caucasus War , which the Russian Empire waged with the aim of joining the region from 1817 to 1864, Akhty was taken by Russian troops in 1839. In the same year the Akhty fortress was built. In 1848 the fortress Akhty was defended against the insurgent troops of Imam Shamil . Akhty was the administrative seat of the okrug Samur of the Dagestan Oblast of the Russian Empire.

In the village there is a monument to Sharvili , a hero of the Lesgian national epic .
