Korkmaskala ( Russian Коркмаскала́ , Avar Къоркъмазхъала ) is a village (selo) in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia with 7722 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The place is about 20 km as the crow flies west-northwest of the center of the republic capital Makhachkala on the edge of the Greater Caucasus . It is located on the right bank of the Shuraosen River .

Korkmaskala is the management center Rajons Kumtorkalinski and seat the rural community selsowet (selskoje posselenije) Korkmaskalinski, (of Korkmaskala through the area of the North Western part of the to also include the 15 km northeast village Dachadajewka preferred Stadtkreis separated Machatschkala). In the place as in the entire Rajon live predominantly Kumyken , but also Avars and Darginer .

history

From March 19, 1935, the area around today's location belonged to the territory of the newly created Kumtorkalinski rajon, based in the eponymous village of Kumtorkala , about five kilometers to the southwest . The Rajon was dissolved again on July 5, 1944. The district center of Kumtorkala was completely destroyed in 1970 by an earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale on May 14, with a large number of aftershocks lasting until the end of June. The place was abandoned and in the same year the construction of the new settlement Korkmaskala for the residents began. The place is named after the Kumyk publicist and politician Dschelal-ed-Din Korkmassow (Russified form of name), who was born in Kumtorkala in 1877 and fell victim to Stalinist repression in 1937 ( Korkmaskala means Korkmas city ).

With the new formation of the Kumtorkalinski rajon on September 18, 1992, Korkmaskala became its administrative seat.

Immediately on the southern outskirts of Korkmaskala runs the federal highway R217 Kawkas (formerly M29; on this section, to Makhachkala, also part of the European route 50 ), which runs along the northern edge of the Caucasus and the coast of the Caspian Sea towards Azerbaijan . The nearest train station is 5 km northeast in the Shamchal settlement on the Rostov-on-Don  - Makhachkala - Baku route .
