Bawtugai ( Russian Бавтуга́й ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia with 4765 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 60 km as the crow flies northwest of the republic capital Makhachkala on the edge of the Greater Caucasus . It is located to the left of the original bed of the Sulak River and the drainage channel from the Tschirijurt Dam 2 km south to the hydroelectric power station in the north .

Bawtugai belongs to the district of Kisiljurt and is located about 5 km southwest of the center of the city of Kisiljurt. The settlement is mostly inhabited by Avars .

history

The settlement goes back to the originally Kumyk Aul Bawtugai  , which is located immediately to the northeast and to the right of the canal - his name is in Kumyk for "blossoming vineyard "; today the village (selo) Stary Bawtugai ("Old Bawtugai"). In 1819 it was the scene of the first great battle of the Caucasus War .

The new place was created in 1957 as a workers' settlement in connection with the construction of the Tschirijurt dam, which lasted from 1954 to 1964. In 1963 he was placed under the administration of the newly formed city of Kisiljurt. In 1992 Bawtugai received urban-type settlement status.

The federal highway R217 Kawkas runs about 2 km north of Bawtugai (on the section to Makhachkala also part of European route 50 ). The nearest train station on the Rostov-on-Don  - Makhachkala - Baku line is in Kiziljurt .
