The Nogaiski rajon ( Russian Ногайский район ) is located in the extreme northwest of the Russian republic of Dagestan .

geography

The Rajon borders the Republic of Kalmykia in the north, the Stavropol Region in the west, Chechnya in the south and the Tarumovsky Rajon of the Dagestan Republic in the east . The city of Yuzhno-Sukhokumsk is enclosed by the territory of the Nogaiski rajon, which , however, forms a separate urban district and does not belong to the Rajon. The area of ​​the Rajon is about 9000 square kilometers.

The main population of the Nogaiski rajon is made up of the Nogaier , a Turkic people after whom the Rajon was named. They are mainly Sunni Muslims. There is a strong minority of Darginers , also an autochthonous people of the Republic of Dagestan. Furthermore, few Chechens , Russians , Kumyks , Avars , Laken , Lesgians and Azerbaijanis live in the Rajon. With a population density of 2.5 inhabitants / km², the Nogaiski rajon is by far the most sparsely populated district of Dagestan.
