Wöhlbier passed his Abitur at the Martin-Luther-Gymnasium in Lutherstadt Eisleben . He then studied geophysics , mineralogy and mining science at the Technical University of Munich , the Clausthal Mining Academy and the Wroclaw University of Technology . There he acquired the academic degree of a graduate engineer in 1929 and that of a doctor of engineering in 1931 . In 1925, while studying in Clausthal, he became a member of the Schlägel und Eisen fraternity .

Professional background

Herbert Wöhlbier held a position as a scientific assistant to Georg Spackeler during his studies in Breslau . After several years of activity as a department head in mining, he accepted a call to the full professorship in mining science and the management of the State Lignite Research Institute at the Freiberg Mining Academy in 1941 . In 1948 he moved to the Clausthal Mining Academy as a full professor of mining science and director of the Mining Institute. Wöhlbier, who held the post of rector there from 1962 to 1964, retired in 1977 .

Wöhlbier, who was elected a member of the International Bureau for Rock Mechanics at the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin and the International Committee for Mining, was one of Germany's leading mining experts at the time.
