Career

Hassan Saman Tahmasebi only started wrestling at the age of 17 in 2002. He became a member of the sports club Takhti Sanadarash (Gholam Reza Takhti was the first Iranian world champion in wrestling). He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style and always started as an adult in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 84 kg body weight. He studied sport and was or is mainly trained by Janshid Heirabadi and, after moving to Azerbaijan in 2011, by Farid Mansurov .

Right at his first start at an international championship, the 2006 World Cup in Guangzhou, he won with wins over Jose Antonio Arias Pareses, Dominican Republic, Kim Jung-sub , South Korea, a defeat against Nazmi Avluca , Turkey and wins over Jake Clark, United States and Kim-Jussi Nurmela , Finland a world championship bronze medal. At the Asian Games in Doha in 2006, he did not do nearly as well. He came there to a victory over Manoj Kumar from India, but lost in his next fight against Janarbek Kenjeew from Kyrgyzstan, which he ended up in 9th place.

In May 2007 Hassan Saman Tahmasebi was the winner of the Asian Games in Bishkek, ahead of Cho Hyun-chul, South Korea and Janarbek Kenjeew. At the 2007 World Cup in Baku he was also very successful again, winning there with victories over Shingo Matsumoto, Japan, Nenad Žugaj , Croatia and Yunior Estrada Falcon , Cuba, a defeat against Bradley Vering , United States and further victories over Jan Fischer , Germany and Kim Jung-sub again a world championship bronze medal.

In 2008 he started at the Olympic Games in Beijing. He won there in his first fight against Oleksandr Darahan from Ukraine, but then lost to Nazmi Avluca. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 11th place.

In 2009 Hassan Saman Tahmasebi did not play any international championships.

In February 2010 he started at the Yadegar-Iman-Cup in Qom for Iran and took 3rd place there. After that he left Iran, moved to Azerbaijan and there very quickly received the Azerbaijani citizenship. So fast that he was able to start at the World Cup in Moscow in September 2010. He won there first over Dejan Sernek from Slovenia, but lost in his second fight against Damian Janikowski from Poland and only reached 19th place.

At the 2011 European Championships in Dortmund he lost to Jan Fischer and was eliminated with this defeat. He finished 15th. He did much better at the 2011 World Cup in Istanbul. There he defeated Manoj Kumar and Haykel Achouri, Tunisia, lost to Alim Selimow , won over Nenad Zugaj and Janarbek Kenjeew and finally lost the decisive fight for a World Cup bronze medal against Rami Hietaniemi from Finland. With 5th place, however, he had won the right to start at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Hassan Saman Tahmasebi also missed a medal at the 2012 European Championships in Belgrade. He came in 8th place there. At the Olympic Games in London, where he participated for Azerbaijan, he lost to Vladimir Gegeschidze from Georgia and then retired because Gegeschidze did not reach the final. He finished 11th.

At the 2013 European Championships in Tbilisi, he lost his first fight against Alexei Mishin, the multiple world champion from Russia. Then he defeated Dorin Constantin Pirvan from Romania and Fisnik Zahiti from Sweden. But he lost the fight for a bronze medal against Nenad Žugaj from Croatia. At the World Championships in Budapest in September 2013 he had another great success. He defeated in the middleweight division Eugen Ponomartschuk from Germany, Viktor Lörincz from Hungary, Giorgi Zirekidse from Georgia and Rami Hietaniemi from Finland. So he faced his former Iranian teammate Taleb Nariman Nematpour in the final battle . He lost this fight just 3: 5 points and therefore became vice world champion.
