Career

Alim Selimow went to school in Kassumkent, where his mother also works as a teacher. His father died early and that is how he was raised by his older brother, who also made him wrestle in 1991. On the advice of an older friend, he went to Mazyr in Belarus in 1998 , where the friend's uncle Malik Eskenderow , a native of Dagestan, worked at the children's and youth sports school as a wrestling trainer for the Greco-Roman style. With him he improved significantly, so that he could switch to the school of the Olympiareserve in Homel . During a visit to his home town of Dagestan after his world championship title in 2005, Selimov said that it was "the great merit of his coach Malik Eskenderow that he became world champion". Selimow was initially a freestyle wrestler, but after an injury he switched to the Greco-Roman style.

At the World Wrestling Championships in Budapest in 2005 , Selimov had been able to win all of his fights, including the duels against Kim Jung-sub from South Korea , Sándor Bárdosi from Hungary and in the final against Alexei Mishin from Russia .

At the 2007 World Championships, Selimow was tenth. 2006 Vyacheslav Makarenko of Dinamo Homel started for Ukraine at the World Championships, but only reached 22nd place.

In 2008 Alim Selimov failed to qualify for participation in the Beijing Olympics. In 2009 and 2010 he was not seen on any international wrestling mat. But in 2011 he celebrated a comeback. He started at the European Championships in Dortmund and lost there after winning two fights against Jan Fischer from Germany and finished in 9th place. At the 2011 World Cup in Istanbul , he surprised the whole world of wrestling and became world champion for the second time with six winners. In the final, he defeated Poland's Damian Janikowski just by points (2: 1 rounds, 3: 3 points).

Alim Selinow is the first world champion wrestler from Dagestan. He also won a bronze medal at the World Military Championships in 2007, was two-time Dagestan champion, Belarusian champion in 2002 and Polish champion in 2003.

Alim Selimow is 1.75 meters tall and trains at the Trade Union Sports Club Homel . He is married and has a daughter. In 2009 he graduated from the Faculty of Sport at the Francysk Skaryna State University in Gomel. After a short military service, he has been studying history and psychology at the Janka Kupala State University in Hrodna since 2010 .

In the 2012 Olympic year, he didn't really get into shape. He finished in the preparatory tournament in Saransk and Dortmund in the middleweight division only 10th place. At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 he also started in the weight class up to 84 kg (middleweight), but lost his two fights against Alan Chugajew, Russia and Danjal Gadschiew from Kazakhstan and only finished 12th.
