Sanandaj ( Persian سنندج, DMG Sanandaǧ ; also Sanandaj ; Kurdish سنە, Sine ) is the capital of the Iranian province of Kordestān near the border with Iraq . The city is 512 km away from the state capital Tehran and is at an altitude of 1480 m .
history
Sanandaj was a wealthy city under the Sassanids , but was almost completely destroyed in the era of the Zand princes . Today's Sanandaj is a little older than 300 years. At that time the Persians built a castle near the village of Sine / Seneh . Castle means Daj in Persian , so the settlement that developed around the castle was called Seneh-Daj, from which the current name Sanandaj is derived. Today nothing is left of the first settlement Seneh. For centuries the city was also the capital of the Principality of Ardalan . Nowadays it is one of the most famous cities in western Iran.
Craft
As in many parts of Iran, carpet production (→ Persian carpet ) is a well-developed art. The carpets from Sanadaj are mostly sold under the name Senneh . They typically have a strong red component on a dark blue background. The basis is an abstract form of the Herati pattern . This makes them similar to the Bidschar , but they are less tightly knotted.
traffic
The railway line (Tehran) -Robat Karim-Sanandaj is supposed to end in the city. The single-track line will allow a speed of 160 km / h and will be opened in 2016.
