FK Proleter Zrenjanin was formed on June 27, 1947 through the merger of most of the city's previously existing football clubs, including AK Obilić founded in 1919 , RSK Borac founded in 1921 and ŽSK founded in 1922 . In the 1930s these clubs were among the top 20 best clubs in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia .

Proleter Zrenjanin currently plays in the Zrenjanin League, the fifth division in Serbian football . The club achieved its first significant successes at the end of the 1960s , more precisely from 1967 to 1969, when they participated in the 1st league of Yugoslavia. Proleter was first class again from 1973 to 1975 and from 1990 to 1992. In between they spent most of the time in the 2 league and belonged to the most successful teams there.

After the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1992, the club played from then on in the newly formed 1st division of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until 2000. From then on, the club's sporting and financial collapse followed. On December 11, 2005 the game was stopped. But already in 2006 Proleter Zrenjanin was re-established.
