Pascual Harriague

Pascual Harriague (* 1819 in Hasparren in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department , France ; † 1894 in Bayonne , France) was a French winemaker .

The Frenchman from the Basque Country , who emigrated to Uruguay in 1838 , is considered to be the main driving force behind viticulture in Uruguay . From 1840 he lived in the city of Salto and later founded the La Caballada estate there. He introduced the Tannat grape variety , which is still the most important variety in Uruguay to this day. In Uruguay, the variety is sometimes synonymous with Harriague.
