The Rhein-Neckar-Halle

The Rhein-Neckar-Halle is a sports and multifunctional hall in Eppelheim . It can be divided into three halls, with a judo practice room and a bodybuilding room in the basement and rooms for a restaurant. It is located at Pestalozzistraße 10.

history

The hall was built in 1970 as a large sports hall.

The hall was primarily used for school sports in the adjoining school center with elementary, secondary and secondary schools as well as a grammar school. In addition, the hall of the SG Kronau-Östringen (today's Rhein-Neckar Löwen ) served as a venue before the opening of the SAP Arena in nearby Mannheim in 2005. Due to the year-round occupancy of the SAP Arena, the hall often served as an alternative venue for the handball Bundesliga club.

In the 1970s and 1980s the hall was the Mecca for all fans of the rock and pop music scene. Bands and artists still known today such as Frank Zappa , Genesis , AC / DC , The Police , Mike Oldfield or Kool & the Gang were guests in Eppelheim and regularly filled the hall with up to 8,000 visitors. At that time it was also the setting for appearances by German political celebrities during election campaign times. In 1982 games of the handball world championship were played here.

At that time, the Rhein-Neckar-Halle was the largest covered event location in the Rhein-Neckar district and was only replaced by the Maimarkt-Halle in Mannheim at the end of the 1980s , mainly because of the better infrastructure and parking facilities. In addition, there was the opening of the SAP Arena in 2005. In spring 2020, a new, multifunctional large sports hall is to be completed in Heidelberg.

The hall has not been approved for events with more than 199 people since 2012 due to fire protection deficiencies and has only been used for school sports since then. Their future has not yet been decided.
