Northern end of the Eiterbach valley

Eiterbach is a district of the Odenwald community Heiligkreuzsteinach in the Rhein-Neckar district of Baden-Württemberg . It runs as a thin settlement thread along the stream of the Eiterbach and extends in the north to the state border with Hesse .

history

The coat of arms of Eiterbach 1898–1935

While the main town of today's municipality under the name Heilecrutzsteina was first mentioned in 1293, Eiterbach, then Eyterbach, was built under the rule of Waldeck in 1316. The name Eiterbach probably comes from the old udder-related water designation that recurs in the Odenwald near the Itter . Eiterbach clearly had the character of a row of individual courtyards, preferred throughout the " Waldeck Winery ", with irregular, block-shaped plots and forest in the joint ownership of the farm farmers.

Attractions

North of Eiterbach, on the edge of an extensive mountain forest area around the Stiefelhöhe, on its eastern slope in a small side valley, the Romanesque church ruins and pilgrimage site of St. Maria in Lichtenklingen are located . A parking lot at the end of the northern Sackstrasse into the valley, already in Hessen, opens up this and the nature reserve in the floodplain.
