Schwabeck Castle

The former Schwabeck Castle (also known as Schwabeneck Castle and Schwabenheim Castle ) was a low castle on the Neckar near Schwabenheim , a district of Dossenheim .

location

The castle stood about 300 meters upstream from Schwabenheim at the Schwabenheim lock . In the northeast, the former Roman road leads past Ladenburg .

history

Little is known about the history and layout of Schwabeck Castle. There was, however, a military installation at this location as early as Roman times ; For example, a Roman stone was found here, which is now used as a memorial stone. In the Middle Ages, the castle was probably a fief of the cathedral monastery of Worms . Probably, among other things, a water tariff was levied at the castle for passing ships.

The noble family von Schwabenheim , which was first mentioned in 1217 and was related to the knights of Handschuhsheim , probably sat in the castle . From 1320 the Lords of Erligheim and other co-owners were appointed as ministerials . At the beginning of the 16th century, the castle was sold with all goods and rights to the aforementioned lords of Handschuhsheim.

In the 16th century, the castle was finally destroyed by ice and flooding, and the last remains could be seen until the Neckar canalization in the 1920s.

investment

The complex seems to have been unusually large, as indicated at least by the remains of the wall that were documented before the Neckar canal. For a long time after its departure, the field names "Schlössel" and "Schänzel" referred to the former complex.
